Improve Your Chevelle or Other A-Body’s Handling with a Bolt-On Control Arm Upgrade

Your Chevelle, GTO, Olds 442, or other A-body utilize the same front suspension configuration mounted to a perimeter frame. The production front upper and lower control arms use traditional stamped steel assemblies fitted with a coil spring and a shock absorber for dampening. These pieces provided a fairly decent ride 50 plus years ago on bias-ply tires. However, today’s world is vastly different. We want our muscle cars to handle, fit big disc brakes, and wide sticky rubber. These stock stamped steel control arms can literally flex and fail under the cornering and braking forces applied to them, especially in a track environment. The last thing any enthusiast wants is a part failure that could potentially cause damage to their pride and joy (or worse, cause injuries). Updating your GM pony car with Speedway Motors’ beefy Chevelle tubular control arms strengthens and enhances your muscle car’s handling.

Tubular Control Arms Resist Flex and Twisting, Improving Handling and Braking over Stamped Control Arms

As we stated earlier, a stamped steel control arm invites lots of sloppiness into your suspension due to flexing and twisting. While a stamping is indeed stronger than a flat sheet of metal, tubing is stronger still. So, when creating tubular suspension with steel tubing you greatly increase the rigidity of the product, eliminating that slop from twisting and flexing. What does that mean for you behind the wheel? When it comes to tubular control arms vs stock stamped arms you dive into a corner on our tubular control arms your vehicle will go where you point it to. Getting down on that brake pedal for some extreme braking? Even your brakes will perform better since your tubular control arms aren’t flexing under that hard braking input.

These are the best tubular control arms Chevelle and A-body owners will find and feature a robust 1-5/8-inch diameter tubing for the tubular lower control arms and 1-1/4-inch tubing for the tubular upper control arms, both finished in a show-quality gloss black powder coat. Wall thickness of our tubular steel control arms is .120-inch on both the uppers and the lowers. Due to the thickness and material diameters these GM A body control arms do weigh more than the stock stamped control arms, but the small trade off in unsprung weight for the vast increase in strength makes it worth the small weight penalty.

We have fitted greasable Delrin bushings and OE-spec ball joints to our tubular A arms with easy access grease fittings to make maintenance a breeze. Polyurethane bump stops are included for both upper and lower arm assemblies and these control arms are compatible with stock-style shock absorbers or can be used with aftermarket coilover shocks. Fitting coilover shocks requires removal of the OE-style shock mounting nuts that are welded to the lower control arm spring pocket. We also recommend our to ensure the coilover shock is properly supported in the Speedway Camaro control arms.

A Direct Bolt-In Solution That Is Easy to Install

Our tubular lower control arm bolts into place using your original control arm’s mounting hardware. If your fasteners have seen better days or went missing don’t worry, we offer a and to keep your project from grinding to a halt. Revised sway bar end links with heim joint ends are included to provide an easy solution to retain your existing sway bar when installing our tubular lower control arms in this kit.

Due to the design of our tubular lower control arms, we highly recommend upgrading to , as the drum brake backing plate interferes with the lower control arm and will require major surgery to retain your factory drum brakes up front. Lastly, we built a deep spring pocket in the stock location to allow ride height adjustments by simply adding user-supplied/fabricated shims under the included polyurethane spring pad.

The tubular upper arm in our kit features additional positive caster designed right into the control arm to enhance handling, including high speed stability and cornering. A direct bolt-in solution, we offer a replacement if your original fasteners should be damaged or have become lost. We also offer a nice for your upper control arms if your old shims are damaged or you need additional shims to set your alignment to your preferred specifications.

What more could you ask for from a set of bolt-on Speedway tubular control arms like these? Your muscle car gains increased handling, lower ride height, performance bushings with minimal deflection, and more, all without the cost of upgrading to an aftermarket subframe and the major work that entails.

Little details could make these great. Rated by Bobthebuilder on January 31, 2022

Summary: This kit comes in two boxes. The ball joint studs were hanging out of their box. The paint was flaking off in places and they were covered in scratches where there was paint. I didn't take a chance on the ball joints that come with them. First thing I did was replace them. On installation I needed to open the rear pockets about 1/16" - 1/8" to get the bushings in. I read where other people had the same issues and opened up the pocket using a hammer. I prefer not to use a hammer on my car unless I need to & I was working on jack stands not having a lot of swinging room. What I did was I built a puller using a peice of 1/2" threaded rod and anchored it in the crossmember and using a threaded rod coupling was able to pull the pocket open. You will have to remove the centerlink from the pitman arm for clearance. I haven't gotten to drive the car yet as I live in Canada, but soon May will be here and I can get an alignment and burn up some tires and fuel.

Yes, I recommend this product.
