DIY String Alignment System – Race Developed Design (3D Printed Components Only)

Build your own professional-grade string alignment system using the same design I\'ve developed and used over multiple racing seasons on my BMW E36 M3 race car.

This setup will allow you to easily measure and adjust individual wheel toe, total toe, thrust angle and caster.

This listing includes the 3D printed components only. Tubing, hardware, and string are not included. Selling the printed components separately keeps shipping costs reasonable and allows buyers to source commonly available materials locally.

This system has been refined through real-world track use and has been used to set up a race-winning car, providing accurate and repeatable alignment measurements without the need for an expensive alignment rack.

What\'s Included
  • (4) Corner connector blocks

  • (4) String bar supports

  • (4) Vehicle mounting hooks

All threaded features are designed to accept M8 x 1.25 thumb screws or set screws.

Material Required (Not Included)

The following tubing dimensions have been tested and are suitable for the vast majority of street cars, sports cars, race cars, autocross cars, and full-size pickup trucks.

Square Tubing

Material:

  • 3/4\" x 3/4\" x 0.120\" wall 6063-T5 aluminum square tubing

Cut List:

  • (8) pieces at 32\"

  • (2) pieces at 48\"

Round Tubing

Material:

  • 3/4\" aluminum round tubing

Cut List:

  • (2) pieces at 8 feet long

Additional Items Required
  • M8 x 1.25 thumb screws or set screws

  • Alignment string

  • Measuring tape or toe plates (depending on preferred alignment method)

String Recommendation

For the greatest accuracy, I recommend using high-visibility monofilament fishing line.

My personal setup uses:

  • 8 lb test monofilament

  • 0.18 mm diameter

  • Orange color

This provides excellent visibility while maintaining a very straight and precise reference line.

If improved visibility is preferred, a larger diameter line can also be used.

Universal Mounting Hooks

The mounting hooks are designed to work on the vast majority of vehicles and can typically be attached to:

  • Radiator supports

  • Bumper supports

  • Grille structures

  • Chassis attachment points

  • Other solid mounting locations

The design allows the frame to be positioned around a wide variety of vehicle types.

String Bar Preparation

The round tubing used for the string bars requires six precision-spaced notches to be cut into each tube for proper string placement.

Detailed instructions are provided through a QR code included with every purchase.

The guide includes:

  • Notch dimensions and locations

  • Assembly instructions

  • Hardware recommendations

  • String installation instructions
