ACTIVE AUTO is a small local engine tuning, repair, and parts shop located in Shimane prefecture outside of Hiroshima, Japan from the 90’s and early 2000’s. They supported many well known cars in the drifting community mainly focused on FC’s or FD rotary engines and S-Chassis SR powered cars during that era.
Especially know for being the main engine tuner of the infamous yellow FC Rx7 driven by Mitsuru Haruguchi that was not only a timepiece for the 90s and early 2000's, but a first of its kind in regards to the styling, which has lead to some of the specific car cultures we see today, but do you know the story behind the car?
The FC3S was owned, and driven extremely well, by Mitsuru Haraguchi. Mitsuri-san is now known for many things, but his early rise to fame was through the D1GP in which he drove his RX7. He was popular in Japan for being a little out there and loud with his car styling, and is reported to have said many times, "I don't want people to say 'wow' or 'cool'. I want people to say 'huh!?' or 'what!?'", and this showed with the way his car was presented.
Big deep dish lip wheels, large wing, a wide body kit, and a low stanced car were not really a thing back in that era, but Haraguchi brought this to the attention of car enthusiast across the world and is at the forefront for what has influenced this kind of culture and style that we see today, not only in drifting, but street style in general.
While this car is pretty commonly used for BN sports marketing of FC body kits, you'll notice the Active Auto sticker on the front windscreen, and on the side skirts and doors on some of the their demo cars.
This was well before Active Auto had established themselves, yet the founder had been honing his craft building engines for years prior, and supported Haruguchi in his drifting journey.
With the support of Active Auto at the time Mitsuru Haruguchi eventually started his own company 326Power and started to create some of the most recognizable body kits and wheels in the world of JDM vehicles and drifting. He continues to influence the style of these vehicles to this very day. The 326power team in Japan continue to use his style and colorway for their own vehicles.
Technical Garage Active Auto still stands till this very day, but focus has shifted a little bit supporting circuit racing cars of all makes and being a go to local repair, and auto parts shop. Supplying both OEM and aftermarket tuning parts to locals.
