This is a real deal original Muncie M-20 4 speed transmission. This transmission just came from the estate of a life long hot rodder. I don't have any history on this tranmission but it looks to be in good rebuildable transmission and shifts through all forward gears and reverse. This transmisison would be a good choice for a variety of applications. Please confirm your specific application.
This transmission has a main case casting number of 3885010 as shown. The 3885010 case was used on Muncie transmission from later 1966-1967. I believe this to be a 1967 transmission based on the fact that that the partial VIN on the top of the maincase is a 1966 VIN and the assembly stamp looks to show is is a 1967 transmission. The assembly stamp is P7C20 which shows this transmission was assembled on March 20th, 1967. The tailhousing is casting number 3856429. The side cover is casting number 3884685. The front bearing retainer is casting number 3915020. The input shaft has 2 grooves in it which signifies this is a M20 wide ratio transmission. This transmission looks to be in good original condition as shown. I see no repairs to this transmission. All mounting ears are in good shape with no cracks or welds. All threads are in good condition with no helicoils or thread inserts. The only flaw I see is a possible cracked area behind where the shifter mounts on the tail housing. This could be a casting flaw but to be on the safe side I am saying it needs repair. This area will be hidden behind the shifter and not show when installed. This is simply an awesome factory high performance transmission for your special car or collection. .
I removed the side cover from the transmission to inspect the internals. The internals of this transmission look nice with no rust or pitting. The gear teeth are all in great shape with no chips or other damage. I am selling this transmission as a core for rebuilding to be on the safe side. That said, many hot rodders would replace some seals and small parts and attempt running this as it is. I believe that was the past owner's plan was since it has a "no oil" tag on it to remind him to add oil before using it. This is a very nice Muncie M20 4 speed transmission that deserves to be rebuilt and used. .
