A radiator is the key component of the engine’s cooling system. Its main role is to disperse a mix of antifreeze and water throughout its fins, which releases some of the engine’s heat while taking in cool air before continuing to pass the rest of the engine. Alongside the radiator is the spur line, water pump, and fan clutch. Each of these plays a different role in aiding the radiator to keep the engine cool. The spur line dispatches warm coolant to the heater core to produce hot air when needed, while the water pump sends the coolant to flow throughout the engine. Most importantly is the role of the fan clutch, which is to bring more air into the radiator and help lower the temperature of the antifreeze and water mixture.

      • An unusual rise and fall in the instrument cluster temperature gauge
      • The sight or smell of smoke coming from under the hood of the car
      • Any amount of green liquid (coolant or antifreeze) collecting under the vehicle
      • Visual evidence of rust on the components of the cooling system

      • Auto Engine overheating
      • Fan Noise/Wear
      • Fan Fuse Blown
      • Air Conditioner Can Not Dissipate Heat

How to Remove a Radiator Safely and Efficiently:

      • Step 1:Wait until your car is cooled off.

      • Step 2:Inspect all radiator connections. This includes hoses, hose connections, clips and relevant hardware. Get an overall picture of what exactly needs to come off before the radiator can be removed.

      • Step 3:Once the engine has completely cooled off, drain the radiator fluid. Most radiators have a simple drain plug. Make sure you have a large drain pan under the outlet.

      • Step 4:Save the coolant from the drain pan. You can filter and reuse the fluid once you’re ready to install the new radiator.

      • Step 5:Remove the overflow tank. This is usually connected to the radiator with a small tube.

      • Step 6:Unplug the electrical connection to the cooling fan. Similar to a headlight blub, just press the tab or clip that secures the connection, wiggle it off, and you’re good to go.

      • Step 7:Remove the upper radiator hose. You’ll need pliers to loosen the metal clamp.

      • Step 8:Remove the lower radiator hose. This is ALWAYS harder to access than the upper hose; you may have to jack your car up to find the lower radiator hose clamp.

      • Step 9:If necessary, remove cooling lines from the automatic transmission.

      • Step 10:Remove radiator mounting bracket.

How to Replace a Cooling Fan Safely and Efficiently:

      • Locate the Radiator Cooling Fan---Turn off your car and allow it to cool off. Open the hood of your car and you will be able to see the radiator that is located at the back of the grill at the front portion of your engine compartment. The radiator cooling fan is attached at the back of the radiator through a mounting frame.
      • Disconnect the Power Supply---On the fan motor is an electric cable running towards the engine. Find the connector of the wires from your engine and from your radiator fan motorand disconnect it. Using two electrical tapes with different colors, note the connection of the wires so that you will not have a hard time reconnecting the wires later.
      • Remove the Fan Housing---Using a wrench, remove the four screws located at each corner of the fan housing. Remove the fasteners at the sides of the fan housing as well. A radiator cooling fan housing is relatively large and you may need to remove all the obstructions like hoses and wirings so that you can extract the fan housing off your car. Hold the housing firmly and lift it out of your engine compartment. Be careful in removing the fan housing to avoid damaging it or the radiator. Place the fan housing on a clutter-free working table.
      • Remove the Radiator Cooling Fan and the Fan Motor---The fan blade is either pinned or screwed to a shaft. With a screwdriver, loosen the fan blade and slide if off its shaft. You may need to remove a keeper that prevents the fan blades from moving up in the shaft up and down. As to the fan motor itself, remove it from the fan housing using a screwdriver
      • Attach the Replacement Radiator Cooling Fan and Fan Motor---Install the new fan motor into the fan housing. Slide your replacement radiator cooling fan into the shaft, insert the keeper and secure the new cooling fan and keeper into place. Return the fan housing back into its proper place and secure the screws and the fasteners. Reattach the hoses and wires you removed in step 3.
