For 1996 the F1 GTR was reduced to 600 hp by handicap rules enforced by the GT Racing Series. To compensate McLaren improved the aerodynamics of the car by using a larger rear wing. The weight of the car was also reduced. The 1996 F1 GTR finished a respectable 4th overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
