Although the first 512 BB LM were created in 1978, it first debuted in 1979 at the 24 Hours of Daytona. Unfortunately, of the three cars entered, one crashed and the other two were withdrawn from the race. The 512 BB LM was also entered in the 24 Hours of Le Mans of that same year, but faired no better - only one car finished, in twelfth place. In 1980, the 512 BB LM was reworked: horsepower was bumped up from 480 to around 500, and weight was decreased by about 200 pounds. Aerodynamics were improved by the vented side skirts that also doubled as a main styling aspect of the car. The improved car was entered at Le Mans again in 1980, but the best finish was only tenth overall. The 512 BB LM raced at Le Mans for two more years, but only managed a best of 5th overall.
