As a result from BMW's participation in Group A racing, BMW created the Evolution models of the E30 M3 to satisfy the racing series" homologation rules. The Evo I wasn"t much more than an aerodynamics package (larger front spoiler, subtle rear deck spoiler), but the Evo II had the power upgrades to go with the exterior modifications. New camshafts and pistons, a compression ratio of 11.0:1, and upgraded engine management software resulted in 25 more horsepower (195 to 220). Weight was also reduced by using lighter front and rear spoiler and windows. The car was only produced for three months in 1988, with a total of 501 constructed.
