2005 Monterey Historic Automobile Races
Article ImagesEvery August, thousands of cars gather in the Monterey Peninsula for various reasons. Some cars will be meticulously cared for the entire weekend and will spend just a few hours on a putting green before being packed away into a museum or garage. Others will be put up on the auction block to be sold to the highest bidder. And then there are the 400 or so cars that compete in the vintage races at Laguna Seca. These cars are used how their builders intended, and their owners have no fear for dust, dirt, oil, and sand traps. While trading paint is strictly prohibited, drivers still show a fair amount of competitiveness and are usually able to drive the cars to their full potential. Further adding to its appeal, the races last a full three days, giving enthusiasts a chance to see many of their favorite cars in action even if they attend some of the other events during the weekend. Each year the Historics features a specific car, and this year was no exception. The 32nd annual Monterey Historic Automobile Races honored the "Great American Specials." The goal was to pay respects to the individual efforts of American racers in various eras of motorsports who produced homegrown racecars that challenged the larger and dominant manufacturers. Epitomizing this theme are the Chaparral cars created by Jim Hall in the 1960's. The Chaparrals, the featured marque of the races, were honored in a way that only the Historics could have done. All six of the restored Chaparral cars, not just a few, were driven on track together for several display and parade laps. Those that missed the cars on the track or anyone wanting a closer look could also see the cars together on display in the paddock. Also in the paddock, visitors could see the 'Rolex Moments in Time' exhibit that featured eight vintage racing automobiles as well as the 'Chrysler Heritage' display. Those wanting a nice souvenir could find racing legends Bobby Rahal, Phil Hill, Vic Elford, or Sir Stirling Moss to sign their event program during the autograph sessions. Additional racing memorabilia could be found in the Expo area where vendors offered just about anything a car enthusiast could want. This year the wide variety of cars and competetive racing once again proved that the Monterey Historics will continue to be one of the world's greatest automotive events. Everything from the sights to the smells to the sounds of vintage race cars going around the United State's most famous track make for a great combination. We look forward to next year's event with Cooper being honored as the featured marque. | ||||||
