THE ULTIMATE DIECAST COLLECTABLE - In February of 1999 the world got it's first look at the future of racing with the introduction of the new C5-R. After two years of top secret development the car was introduced at Daytona's 24 hour endurance race. The car marked a turning point for GM and their dedication to racing. Ron Fellows qualified for the pole in his class the first time out. The car lead it's class for 20 hours before having some difficulties but managed to finish 18th overall and 3rd in it's class. The introduction of this car was what many Corvette fans had been waiting for... the return to glory for Corvette. Produced in 1:12 scale, this model is 1 of just 500 made and features so many intricate details you almost expect it to start up and drive away!
EXTERIOR. The detail GMP incorporated in the C5-R is staggering; the longer you look, the more you find. Photo-etched metal parts are used to make the grille openings in the nose, hood and tail. Headlights and taillights accurately mimic the real ones. And just like the real C5-R, the hood and rear panels are removable to expose the inner workings. Tiny rubber clips simulate the metal draw latches on the big car and work well to keep the panels in place. Door handles are hinged and appear to function but are just for show; magnets mounted under the body where the door would actually latch keep the doors closed.
The black and silver paint scheme distinguishes this car from other C5-Rs since then, and GMP did a great job laying down the paint on its model. It has a smooth, gleaming finish that has obviously been carefully applied.
INTERIOR. The inside of a race car is built purely for function and, as expected, GMP took no shortcuts in accurately reproducing the interior of this piece. All kinds of material textures and colors mimic the full-size race car. From textured driver’s seat and steering wheel to aluminum floorboard and carbon fiber interior panels, no detail was overlooked.
Opening either door reveals the complex roll cage that protects the driver during side impacts; a closer look reveals simulated welding marks at each of the joints! Cables, tubes and cabin air hoses line the driver’s compartment in the right spots. Small wire straps are used to hold air ducting to the roll cage. The instrument cluster with it’s multitude of knobs and toggle switches on the dash has been faithfully reproduced, and a bright red five-point fabric seat belt sits loosely on the driver’s seat. Even the water cooler mounted on the passenger side that keeps the driver hydrated is accurately plumbed.
UNDER THE HOOD. The front hood and rear panels lift right off the model to expose the inner workings just as they do on a real race car. The quality and intricacy of details built into the engine compartment are exceptional. Orange ductwork directing air to the brake rotors and engine twin intake plenums is pliable and feels like real rubber. Springs mounted on the exhaust headers are visible, and all plumbing and wires are colored and routed correctly. Like the engine bay, the rear compartment is well adorned with mechanical and electronic details. The giant oil reservoir with its blue and aluminum braided hosing stands out.
SUSPENSION, WHEELS & TIRES. Not surprisingly GMP did a great job of getting the look, stance and wheel placement correct on this model. Functioning front and rear suspensions and a moveable rear swaybar allow the car to settle properly. Tires are constructed of real, pliable rubber. And because this Corvette is heavy - 6 pounds 9.5 ounces to be exact - when the model is set down there is just the right amount of mass to compress the suspension and make the tire sidewalls, giving the model an ultra-realistic look.
Simulated multi-spoke OZ wheels are fitted with rubber Goodyear Eagle tires that have been scuffed for a true-to-life matte finish. An included wheel-nut tool makes tire removal a cinch, and once off even more chassis detail are exposed. Another outstanding feature of this model are the functioning onboard air jacks. Each is spring-loaded; a 1/8 turn pops the jack out, and another slight turn locks them into place. With all four wheels removed, the car can be displayed resting on the jacks.
THE BOTTOM LINE. The GMP 1999 Pratt & Miller Corvette C5-R encompasses everything you could want in a die-cast. Amazing inside and out, with incredibly intricate and accurate details when compared to the real thing. And being modeled after the first new-generation C5-R that started it all for Corvette Racing definitely ups its “gotta-have” factor. GMP did an excellent job of capturing all the things that make the real C5-R Corvette so amazing, and this diecast will surely be the prize of anyone’s collection.
