Here's the story behind the car and the record, as provided by Exoto.com: Multi-talented driver Mark Donohue was lured out of retirement by Roger Penske and back behind the wheel in 1975. Challenged to break to the World Closed Course Speed Record set by A.J. Foyt in 1974, testing began in January of 1975 at Daytona, a similar tri-oval super speedway to Talladega, where Foyt set his record in 1974. A number of major engine problems were discovered immediately and as a result, overheating destroyed 2 or 3 engines before factory Porsche engineers were called in to assist. A pair of massive intercoolers were fitted and although it was still touch and go, it would have to do. During a break in the regular Talladega 500 activities on August 9th, Donohue was given the 'go ahead' for the official attempt. Time was running short, there was no time for a proper cool-down lap when Mark brought the 917/30 in for some last-second adjustments. A brief fire was extinguished, adjustments were made, and during his 2nd lap, the record was smashed! The official 221.160 mph record stood in the United States for 11 years before Rick Mears finally took it away driving an Indy car.
