They protect the ball joint from dirt, water and debris. Deteriorated ball joint covers is a common problem with the Gran Sport, Coupes, Spyders, the 4200\'s, and 3200\'s model vehicles. Basically, in sum the ball joint dust covers were originally designed out of this cheap hard plastic material that deteriorates even if the car is merely sitting.If you look at the photos above of a side by side comparison of the original OEM dust cover, or gaiter, then the aftermarket dust cover you can see it was designed to be heads and tail over the original dust cover.
