JAGUAR XJS CONSOLE PANEL / GEARSHIFT SURROUND / SKI SLOPE 1988 -1996:
To remove the Console Panel / Gearshift Surround / Ski Slope: XJS original equipment console panels (1988 – 1996) are secured with screws, access to these is gained through the cigar lighter aperture, cruise switch and underneath the bridge securing the glove box lid catch at the rear of the console. The cruise switch and cigar lighter can be prised out revealing an 8mm head size hex bolt which secures the panel into the console, these require slackening off two turns. At the rear of the console beneath the glove box lid there is a black plastic bridge covering the end of the panel, remove the four screws that secure this and the catch for the lid revealing a single Philips screw in the middle of the rear of the ski slope. Remove this screw and then lift the ski slope from the rear disconnecting the window switches and removing the ski slope complete with ashtrays and shift gasket.
These panels are made from aluminum rather than steel, and are of course quite a bit lighter in weight and a little bit more flexible. The 2 forked “prongs” that secure the mid section are held with high strength adhesive, and can be VERY carefully bent if needed (splayed apart) but won’t stand much bending laterally.
Please take care with the switch bezels, as these are held in the panel via small plastic tabs that become brittle and tend to break with age.
If the bezels are a tight fit, then you may need to run some sandpaper/flat file around the openings. Better to have a snug fit than have them popping up out of the panel, so this sometimes needs to be done when installing. On the other hand, if your switches are a loose fit/worn/broken tabs, then I recommend using some silicone adhesive from the underside of the panel to secure them.
On panels that have the cup holders, these are installed quite securely into the panel as not to rattle about. If they have moved in shipping, just carefully push them back down flush. On later cars (1994-96) that have the rear air conditioning outlet, there may be some rear Air Con ducting that will need to be modified to give an extra 1/2” clearance for the cups. Some have removed andcompletely blocked off this ducting which has the added benefit of more air flow at face level.
