The idea for the Camaro ZL-1 came from Chevrolet dealer and drag racer Fred Gibb, who wanted to have 427 Camaro to use as a Super Stock drag racing car. NHRA rules stated that at least 50 vehicles had to be built for the car to qualify for racing, so Gibb ordered 50 for his dealership.All fifty of his cars included the ZL-1 options:
- Z22 Rally Sport Package
- J50 power brakes
- N40 power steering
- V10 tachometer
- racig style rearview mirrors
- exhaust resonators
- dual exhaust with tailpipe extensions
- custom steering wheel
- F70-15 black sidewall tires with raised gold lettering
- Custom lug nuts and center caps
- Custom instrument cluster
- Identification decals on the hood, grille, and rear panel
Besides the 50 ZL-1's sent to Gibb's dealership, 19 other ZL-1's were produced, totalling 69.
